How to change MOSS database server

Asked By: Blair    Date: Jul 29    Category: MOSS    Views: 903

Currently I have MOSS and sql server 2005 running on one box and I
would like to move all the databases used by this moss instance to a
separate sql server 2005 on a different box.

Any idea how I can accomplish this?

You basically have three classes of databases; the config database, the content
database(s) and your Shared Service Provider (SSP) databases. Moving the Config
database is not supported. The connection string to it is in the Registry of
your WFEs, so if you're brave you could try to move it and adjust that string.
I'd have a good backup plan first though. :) Content Databases are easy to
move. First run the STSADM operation "preparetomove" on them. Then go into
Central Admin and detach them. Move them over to your new SQL server  and
reattach them in Central Admin. All done! The SSP databases are a different
deal entirely. From what I've read there is not a supported method of moving
them either. I'm in the same boat as you, I need to move mine. I think I'm
going to have to break down and create a new SSP with its databases on the 2nd
SQL server and then remove the existing one.

I will report back to the group once I have the time to do a dry run.
