How to change the install portal URL

Asked By: Bruce    Date: Jun 12    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2273

I inadvertently installed my SharePoint portal with a URL of just the server name, but I actually need the domain name in there as well? How do I change it?

Currently my Default Web Site is pointing to http://servername, but I need it to point to http://servername.domain.com.

Any ideas? Thanks in advance

Can't you just add the host header to the IIS Web Site?

There are a few steps you need to take:

1. In IIS, adjust the properties for your web  site so that you have added port 80 as a supported port. If your IIS server  is hosting multiple sites, you will also want to add abc.com (and presumably http://www.abc.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.abc.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.abc.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.abc.com) as host header values. All of this can be found under the Advanced button on the Web site  tab.

2. Set up a DNS entry that resolves abc.com to the IP address that the IIS server is listening on.

3. In SharePoint portal  Server Central Administration, go to "Configure alternate portal site URLs for intranet, extranet, and custom access". Click on the site that you want to update. You will see four URLs - default, intranet, extranet and custom. Put http://abc.com in the extranet field. If you do also want to support http://www.abc.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.abc.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.abc.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.abc.com, put http://http://www.abc.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.abc.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">http://www.abc.com" target="_blank" rel="nofollow">www.abc.com in the Custom URL field. Click Ok.

You will probably also want to kick off a full search index rebuild. After that, it should all be set.
