Change default site navigation settings?

Asked By: Damaris Sweeney         Date: Jan 30, 2010      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 988

When creating a new site, the "Display the same navigation items as the parent site" and "Display the current site, the navigation items below the current site, and the current site's siblings" is the default options for the global and current navigation.

Our customer would like to have the "Display the navigation items below the current site" and "Display only the navigation items below the current site" as default values when creating a site, since this setting should apply to most of the sub sites that will be created.

Is there any way to do this?

There are two ways to do this:

1) Create a new, custom, site  Definition based on the publishing one and change  the navigation  in your onet.xml file. The easiest way to do this is to copy the BLANKINTERNET site definition, and customise that.

2) Another way to do this is to create a feature and staple that to the publishing site definitions.

If you have other customisations to do, you might consider #1, but otherwise option 2 would be a better way to go.
