Categories have duplicated themselves

Running Sharepoint 2001 and the categories in the document
management system have decided to duplicate themselves in the web
front end - if you look at the back end through a web folder the
folder structure is still correct.

Is there anyway to reset or correct the web front end to re check
the structure?
