Use BlackBerry to access SharePoint

Asked By: Freddie Alvarado         Date: Apr 01, 2008      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 1236

SharePoint sites are internal and uses Integrated Windows
Authentication. When try to access the site using blackberry
browser(blackberry browser, not the internet browser), we get access
denied error message and the user is not prompted for login and password.

I found the following and after the blackberry admin made the change,
the problem is still the same.

1. In BlackBerry Manager, select
<BlackBerry_Enterprise_Server_name>_MDS-CS_1.
2. Click Edit Properties.
3. In the Properties window, click HTTP.
4. Set Support HTTP Authentication to True, then click OK.
5. Restart the BlackBerry MDS Connection Service.

Do you guys have any ideas how to make this work?

Blackberry users can get through if you enable basic authentication
on the web application in question. This is not the best security
though.

I heard talk of using a separate web app as a proxy that can be set
to basic, but don't remember the details.

Does anyone else have more best practice ways?

To do this you should Extend the web application to a separate URL. Add
an SSL server certificate to the new web site  and set  it for Basic
Authentication.

Just a follow up. blackberry  can access  the company network. The
problem is fixed and it is related to proxy settings on the Blackberry
enterprise server.

So if a user  accesses the moss site  via blackberry, the user is
prompted for windows login  and password, afterwards, the mobile view
of the site is displayed.

As an alternative there are third party products like SoftArtisans SilverDust that provide a better mobile experience for SharePoint than what the browser  provides.
