Best-of-breed search solutions for WSS-only deployments?

Asked By: Stacey    Date: Mar 29    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1419

I have a client who has a WSS-only environment for 5000+ end-users ...multiple site collections, multiple servers. ...does not want to purchase SPS (for their own reasons).

What are the best-of-breed search solutions for larger WSS-only multiple site collection, multiple server deployments?

These guys got a lot of hype at Tech Ed 2005:

However, I haven't used their product.

Ontolica is great but it is built-on on top of Sharepoint Portal Search and therefore requires it

Coveo has a very nice look to it but our company recently tested the product extensively and I would not recommend it for large scale implementation. They have some bugs in their application that put what we came to call “ghost” code into sharepoint pages which would have required a lot of cleanup had we implemented in Production.

Can’t you purchase SharePoint search  as its own tool? I know you can use it separate from portal….

Another Search engine with features embedded in WSS/SPS that
connects to ALL enterprise sources, identifies experts, creates
navigation maps etc.

Just want to clear the air on this...earlier this year, Coveo
addressed uninstall issues such that an uninstall of Coveo Enterprise
Search for SharePoint on WSS or SPS is clean. Since then, Coveo has
also been recognized, awarded, and endorsed by Microsoft as the
enhanced search  alternative to SharePoint search.

And from a portal perspective, this is a *great* thing!

I'm not trying to be funny, but Portal Server IS the best of breed search  solution for WSS. Why not include it in your comparison of products?

While SPS Search, as Microsoft has
implemented it, doesn't show off just how powerful of an engine it is;
for the money, it really is a good solution.

That said, have you looked at the Google Mini Michael?

100,000 documents, under $3K. At our .NET user group last night, this
guy was telling me that they are going forward with plans to purchase
it. However, another guy in the same group said that it didn't
categorize their data (retail products) into groups as well as he needed
so he was pursuing a commercial product that started with an "M".
