Beginner / SharePoint Development Env set up help

Hi all,
I would like to learn SharePoint and as a beginner I am struggling to create a SharePoint Development environment. Could someone please guide me how, some step by step instructions on what steps to take and where and what to download all what is needed, to create a development environment in my local machine which has XP professional?

I really need your expert advise. Thank you very much in advance.

I prefer to use the guide created by Andrew Connell of Critical Path Training. You can find the guide here: www.criticalpathtraining.com/.../default.aspx You'll need to create a free account to download the guide, but you can find it on that page labeled as "SharePoint Server 2010 RTM Virtual Machine Setup Guide (v1.6)."

This leads you through the entire process of building a virtual machine for SharePoint and gives you links to all of the software trials you will need.
