Have you been happy with your sharepoint portal

Asked By: Nishita    Date: Jan 19    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 598

Recently we have implemented a "portal" system for our university. We
are currently using DotNetNuke (http://www.dotnetnuke.com ) for our web
portal. Although this is an excellent product, it lacks many of the
basic functions needed for our portal.

I don't have the development resources (only me) to keep up to date with
core code changes to effectively manage this portal product. I have
mentioned Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 to my supervisors and I believe
SPS2003 already contains many of the features we need.

I have approximately 12,000-16,000 students and approximately 1750
employees/faculty that could potentially use the product.

Below is a list of items that need to be in our portal.

- Connection to Exchange 2003
- Connection to our File Server (Each student and staff/faculty gets
personal space)
- Each Department has own "area" for which they can update content
- Personalization for each individual user (ie: can select which
rss/news/school feed they can view)
- Must be connected with Active Directory for Authentication

My Questions:
1. Have you been happy with your sharepoint portal?
2. Have you had good success with any applications you write
specifically for you?
3. Obviously, I have only spent about 10 hours looking at this, are
there any gotchas that I should watch out for when doing an initial
install?
4. How are you using your portal? What "things" are you doing with it?
