BDC Permissions

Asked By: Wyatt    Date: May 07    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1441

I have created a bdc.xml file using BDC Metaman from the Employee table
of the Adventure Works database. I have imported the xml file and
created a BDC list webpart that points to the Adventure Works BDC. The
bdc.xml file uses passthrough as the authenication mode. When I am
logged on as the administrator all is well. I can view the BDC list
webpart on my teamsite, but when I logon as any other user I
get "Access Denied". Can someone point me in the right direction as to
my issue?

If you are using passthrough authentication then it is using the logged on
user's credentials to access  the database. The administrator  usually has access
to the datasbase, but other users don't.

I thought if I used Passthrough then the BDC would use the SharePoint
Application Pool's account credentials to access  the DB. At any rate - I
added a user  account to the database, in this case "Approver" as a user on
the DB through SQL 2005 - that did not seem to help. Should I give this SQL
db user a db role - like reader or something?

You need to give a permission for the users you are trying to login.
You need to do the following steps.

The problem is you didn't given permission for the users for the BDC
list.
You need to give a permission for the users you are trying to login.
You need to do the following steps
1. In Shared Services, click on "Business Data Catelog Permision"
available in BDC session.
2. Click on Add users/Groups add the users or groups you need to
give permission for BDC list.
3. You can restrict the users by selecting "Choose Permission"
check box. If you checked "Execute" check box, that user  can only view  the BDC
list he can't edit the list. If you want to give full permission check all the
check box in that session.
Above steps will be apply only for fresh upload of imported
application(XML file). If you have already import the application you need to
follow the following steps.
1. In Shared Services, Click on "view application" available in BDC
session.
2. Click on the application which you have created.
3. Click on the "Entities" hyperlink available in that page.
4. Click on 'Manage Permissions' and click on Add users/Groups add
the users or groups you need to give permission for BDC list.
If you follow the above step you will get rid from the issue.
