Has anybody seen or know of any problems with using Basic Authentication instead

No problems, just keep in mind that the credentials are sent in the clear so SSL
is highly recommended...

Yes there is a problem in SharePoint Portal server
regarding this Basic v/s Integrated authentication.

Before some days, somebody had mailed his code and
asked what was wrong in it or why it was not working
regarding authentication.

The problem is known as 'Double Hop' and it is a
problem and Microsoft has also confirmed it.

To solve the problem you can use Kerberose instead of
NTLM security mechanism in IIS. If this works then it
is fine. but if it fails then nobody can help
you.(Problem is for Integrated Windows Authentication
