Is barcode generated by SharePoint unique?

Asked By: Santosh Choudhuri         Date: Dec 09, 2009      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 334

Just a question here, is barcode generated by SharePoint unique? If
yes, unique within what? By farm, web app, site collection, etc? It
looks like it is just a random number that probably may be repeated
although may not happen.
We may be using barcode in the Information Management Policy but I
just want to make sure it is unique. I know by using custom code we
can make sure it is unique but if there is already out of the box, I
do not want to reinvent the wheel.

I had this question  come up at a client and as I remember the answer was that
the barcode will be unique  within the SharePoint Farm and will probably be
unique globally, but beyond SharePoint there is no guarantee.
