Backup/Restore Problem

Asked By: Thaddeus Wiggins         Date: Feb 12, 2005      Category: Sharepoint      Views: 226

We did a backup of our production environment and restored it (to test
if it worked) on our development server. Everything seemed to work
fine, but now all of our links in dev are pointing to the production
SPS/WSS enviroment. For example, in our test environment my "My Links"
web part is pointing to "http://production/whatever." Is there a way
to revert these back to the test environment via the DB? Is there a
config setting somewhere to do a quick fix of this mess? We are
planning on changing our domain for production and am concerned that
all prod links will break as well.

Don't forget to verify/change the portal url and alternate portal url settings. Maybe this will help.

Is there any clear step-by step documentation of how to migrate
SPS/WSS across domains? The articles I've found so far say changing
domains is not a great idea and can be very tricky. Any suggestions?

hehe.. tricky as in.. you are treading into the unknown!

theoretically..its possible if you migrate at least the user/computer accounts across.

SharePoint Portal Server Central Admin -> Portal Site and Virtual Server Configuration -> Configure altrenate portal site URLS for intranet, extranet, and custom access -> mouse over and edit. I don't know of a documented process for moving entire portals, sorry.
