We use NetBackUp to do disk backups periodically, but do our nightly
differentials of sharepoint using DocAve. We are looking at DPM to replace both
at some point, but DocAve seems to have a lot of bugs. We did an item level
restore and none of the rights were applied until we got a patch from AvePoint.
We have used DocAve for migration, but again ran into problems and have had to
get patches from them. I like the fact that DocAve does not require me to drop
my current backup method and use them for backuping up to tape as we would have
had to do with ComVault, and we don't have to do native SQL backups as we would
have had to do with Quest. The SQL DBAs up the SQL server right now, so we
don't mess with that. When we move to DPM, we have to let them know, so they
only back up the non-SharePoint DBs, or else the differential backups of one
product 'confuse' the other. Oh! We only use DocAve through the front-end
server, and that works out well. We do differentials every night a full backup
once a month. DocAve is for restoring individual documents and NetBackUp is for
disaster recovery of the server, and then DocAve to refresh the DB.
