Backup and restore utility in a small farm

I have a Sharepoint 2003 configuration of "small server farm" type: one server
running Sharepoint Portal Server, one running SQL Server 2000 holding all the
databases for this portal site. I am trying to run a backup on the Sharepoint
server with the backup and restore utility, but when I try to run this utility,
I get this message : "The configuration database could not be found from this
server. In order to backup any components, you must first join this server to a
farm". Well I thought I did at installation time, and if I check the server
topology, it clearly states "Your farm is fine".

Does anyone know what I might have missed and how I can "join this server to a
farm" ?

Make sure that you are running the backup as an administrator and that the
backup is being made to a network location that both the web and database
servers have access to.

Yes, I was running under an administrator account. And I was not able to give a
network location since I got the error message right after I clicked on the
"Sharepoint Data Backup and Restore" utility.
But I also found out there was a prerequisite I missed: SQL Server client tools
must be installed on the front-end server (it was not). I hope it will solve my
problem (have to wait for the database team to perform that for me).
