backup and restore of SPS 2003

Asked By: Cesar    Date: Jan 29    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 5704

How do I go about copying an entire portal to a different named

I have used the Sharepoint backup and restore utility to backup the
entire portal. I have backed up the Config databases.

Now how do I restore this to a new server with a new name?

What are the steps involved?
Is this even possible?

You don't backup  and restore  the config database. Just backup and restore
the portal databases. The config DB in the new farm will update itself on
the fly.

Yes on further reading I found out not to restore  the config DB.

What else do I need to do Bill?

The server it is being restored to is going to have a different name.

What should I be looking out for?

OK...i attempted the restore  and it looks like it succeeded but when
I tried to open the Portal page I got the following error...

The topnavigation, Version=, Culture=neutral,
PublicKeyToken=fec47fc3a0ee44a4 assembly specified in a Register
directive of this page could not be found.

Web Parts Maintenance Page: If you have permission, you can use this
page to temporarily disable Web Parts or remove personal settings.
For more information, contact your site administrator.

I went in and removed all the webparts" but still ge the error.

ANy ideas?

Is SharePoint Portal Server installed correctly on the destination
server? Can you create a new Portal site?
