Backup Restore to a new server

My IT group is reloading WSS3.0 on a new server - We currently have
the coompany site running on another server offsite - when we take the
back up from the offsite server can we restore to the new server? The
problem is we think the contractors did not load the site correctly to
begin with so we want to set up correctly and use a back up to see how
this works. If your server offsite crashes we would like to be sure we
can restore to another server.

The capability is certainly there to copy/move a site from one server
to another using the STSADM -o export or backup utilities and then
restoring to your local server with STSADM -o import or restore.

Do you have command line access to your offsite server - or if you
are hosting will they do a backup for you?

You may run into issues with version and patching levels. The
backup/restore will insist on being the same version. I don't
remember if the export/import method is as picky.

Make sure you're running the STSADM commands as a farm administrator
as well.
