Automatic Number Generation

Asked By: Ricardo    Date: Jan 03    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 2461

Has anyone been able to setup an incrementing number system, whereby
for example each project is created with its' unique id?
My development team have advised because the incrementing number
requires data to be written to a table behind the scenes, this breaks
in a live environment...for security reasons. Any ideas?

Not sure what you mean by each "project", do you mean each site? If
you're using Portal Server and creating the site through the
SiteDirectory, there's a list behind that which contains each site
that's been created. The ID value from that list will be unique  and
incrementing. You can use ID on any DataView or the All Items view (or a
new view of your creation) if you want. The data  is all kept in SQL so I
don't know what any issues would be on this breaking (I also don't know
what you mean by a "live" envrionment?).
