How to auto-login to java-based system from SharePoint?

Asked By: Roman    Date: Aug 13    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1774

Here's something that's been on my to-do list for awhile and I just
don't know how to go about it.

We have a SharePoint 2003 system running for all our internal
employees to use. We also have a legacy time reporting system written
in Java/JSP/HTML that authenticates users via a simple user/password
login screen.

We'd like to integrate the two systems better by automatically logging
the user in to the time system if they are already logged on to
SharePoint and a valid user in the time system based on user ID.

The table in the time reporting system uses user id's that match the
Windows logins, so we could a SELECT to that table once we have the
authenticated Windows user name to make sure they are a valid time
reporting user.

Right now, when a user click on the time reporting link from
SharePoint, they have to log into the time reporting system EACH TIME
they click on the link.

I realize I'm trying to integrate two different technologies here, but
I'd thought I'd throw it out to you all for any suggestions.

We have the ability to make any changes we want to both systems, so
there really aren't any restrictions.

My initial thought right now is I'll need to build a new Java servlet
that is called from SharePoint and somehow this servlet will have the
ability to call a Windows API function and have it return the user ID
of the authenticated user. If that ID matches a user in the time
reporting table, the login screen is bypassed and the user logged in
