Authentication question ?

Asked By: Code    Date: Dec 26    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 773

Do portal users authenticate against the SQL tables or against
Active directory ?

I am planning a sharepoint portal server 2003 installation and need
to know what firewall ports to open between a web tier, database
tier and Active directory tier. (All tiers are on separate subnets,
with firewall rule controlling access)

IIS, running on the web tier, authenticates users  against the Active
Directory.

SPS authenticaes against it's own database of users, but that database
can be imported via a scheduled process from AD.

I have to disagree here. The database you refer to is the SPS Profile
and it is not used for authentication. IIS does the authentication  and
SPS/WSS does authorization through entries in the table called UserInfo

So IIS and AD are used to check WHO you are and SPS/WSS check WHAT you
can do.
