Audience related question..

Asked By: Dianna    Date: Sep 05    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 983

I need your expertise again...

I have created AD distribution groups to be used as Audiences in my
MOSS site. The groups are empty at this point since I'm waiting for
some feedback before I start adding users. I tried to add these
distribution groups to the site and I can see them when I go to People
and Groups, however, when I tried to create audiences based on these
groups I can not see them. I see other distribution groups but none
of these.

Can anybody tell me what I'm doing wrong?

There's a bug. I think it is missing a SQL stored procedure, but I don't
recall exactly. You probably want to contact Microsoft PSS, or use
Global AD groups.

It is because the groups  are empty  (not sure if this is a bug or not). I ran
into the same thing and when I added a user to the group, I was then able to see
that group in the audience  area. You may need to do a re-import of the profile
information before checking the audience again. It took a few minutes before
the audience picked it up after I added the user to the group.

I haven't tried this but here's a theory. The key I think is that you
state they are distribution  Groups and they are empty. When SharePoint
uses a Distribution group it automatically expands the group out to the
membership and records the actual users, rather than retaining a
reference to the group. If the audience  creation rule is pre-validating
the group membership it may not show empty  distribution groups. Try a
test. Add a user to one of the Distribution groups  and see if the group
then shows up.

Normally, I don't recommend using AD distribution groups to create
audiences because later changes to the groups will not be picked up. I
normally use security groups instead.

It's like trying to base security off of Distribution
Groups, it doesn't work very well if at all...
