ASP.Net Forms Authentication in WSS 3.0

Asked By: Oliver    Date: Jun 14    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 1537

Is there anywhere on the net where I may be able to find a definitive guide
on setting up ASP.Net Forms Authentication for WSS 3.0? I am looking at the
book "Developer's Guide to Windows SharePoint Services 3.0" but seem to be
missing a critical part for adding users.

If you are using a straight SQL ASPnetdb database the easiest way is to
use Visual Studio to create a standard Forms based Authentication
website on a separate port number from the SharePoint site. Add the
same Membership and ConnectionString entries that you are using in
SharePoint to the web.config file of the website. Then use the Website
Application management tool on the Website menu in Visual Studio. This
will bring up a website where you can add users  to the database. You
can't add them directly in SQL because the password field is hashed.

Take a look at Step 3 on the bottom of page 66-67 in the Developer's
Guide again. In hindsight, I didn't put in enough detail on those steps
but the website you are trying to reach is pictured on the top of page
