Archiving & Document Lifecycle Management

I was looking for information on Archiving, Purging and Document
Lifecycle management in SharePoint Server 2003. Preliminary search on
MSDN did not result in any information.

Can someone help me if SP2003 provides out of box features to
archive, backup documents (Say all Financial documents are preserved
for 7 years before being archived). Or

Will these/Can these be customised?
