Applying customized template to welcome page

I have created a basic template in SharePoint Designer from a copy of
the default.master page. It has few things such as company logo, custom
colors and a couple Web parts. I have a few more things to add. Right
now it is plain, so that I can test it first. I am able to see the new
template in SharePoint Server 2007. However, I do not know how to
apply the template to that one particular welcome page that we are
going to use as a default.aspx page.(welcome/home)
I think this is a simple question for you pros out there. Can you help?
