If you use the announcements web part from the resource kit (or MS web site)
you can specify start and end dates for your announcements.

that web part does have the two dates. What would be
REAL cool, however, is to have an "effective date" AND a startdate and
ending date. The start and ending date  would be for parameters determining
when to display the item, but the effective date would be the date that's
displayed, kind of like an event.

Also, it would be nice if instead of DOMAIN\username it would look up the
full name. I thought of trying to code this, but unfortunately it's a bit
over my head with the time I can devote to it. So if any of you have
figured it out already, please share.

I agree with you about the Domain\username thing, it just doesn't look
right. I've had a quick look at the files that come with the web part, and
there is a file called announce.xsl. Within this file is an entry for
'urn:schemas-microsoft-com:publishing:publishedby' which I think might refer
to 'Domain\username'. I'm not sure though and I don't do programming, but
maybe someone else has an idea if this is the value to change, and what to
change it to.

I had analyzed all of this in the past -- again, with a
non-programming-guru-type mind -- and posted it.

Too bad I didn't compose it better for word wrap.

If anyone cares to look at it and possibly provide an answer, that'd be
