Alerts on Helpdesk on sharepoint portal are deactivated

We are using Sharepoint Portal Server 2003 on windows 2003.
On our portal we have helpdesk section. Our system administaror used to receive
alerts for this section before.
All of a sudden it stopped generating alerts.The error message it gave is as
given below.
"
This alert has been deactivated by the portal site. When an alert generates an
excessive number of results, the portal site deactivates the alert to conserve
its resources.
"

This is a feature in Sharepoint so that it's not taxed beyond limit. You
can enable the alerts on by going to "Sharepoint Central administration"
->"WSS" -> "configure virtual server settings" -> "virtual server
settings" -> "virtual server general settings".

You can also set the maximum alerts that can be received over here.

Also you can also manage alerts by going to "site settings" -> "manager
alert settings"

In "Sharepoint Central administration"
->"WSS" -> "configure virtual server settings" -> "virtual server
settings" -> "virtual server general settings".
Here we can set only the maximum no. of alerts for a user.

In Site Settings-->Manage Alert Settings
we can manage diifferent alert settings as below.

Maximum number of search alerts per site: *

Maximum number of other alerts per site: *

Maximum number of search alerts per user: *

Maximum number of other alerts per user: *

Maximum number of results per alert: *

The error message I am getting is saying that the maximum no. of
results an alert can generate is exceeded.

Is it that I need to increase the results per alert value?

What effects will it have?
