Alerts

I'm having some problems with alerts. When I setup an alert for a
document in a Site, I get an email notification (the initial email and
email for changes). But when I try to setup an alert in either my site
(shared documents) or anything at the portal level (i.e., an
announcement), I don't get any email and the My Alert Summary web part
does not update. I thought the indexing schedule applies to the entire
portal. I manually ran both a full update and an incremental update on
the Non-Portal Content and Portal Content and still no changes. Does
anybody know what's wrong or is there a setting or switch that I'm
missing.

Check the SharePoint portal  Alert service and make sure it is running

Alerts in Portal Server and Windows Sharepoint Services are different

For SPS it is triggered by the Sharepoint Portal Alert and search
indexing

For WSS it is triggered by the Sharepoint Timer Service only

Also check the event viewer and portal logs for errors

I noticed setting  up alerts  are different at the site  level compared to
the portal  level.

At the site level  when you set up an alert, there is only 1 option
(Email). This works fine for me with no problems.

At the portal level when you set up an alert, there are 2 options (My
Alert Summary and Email). My alert  Summary web  part works fine but I'm
not receiving any email  for changes even when I specify send alert
results immediately.

I verified that all services are running and the searching and indexing
are running incrementally every 5 minutes.

What am I missing?

Has anybody noticed this problem. I've tested this on 5 different portal
sites and I get the same results.

I had setup  a portal  with Integrated Authentication and everything works fine.
But when I switched to Basic Authentication, the alerts  stopped working and I
was not able to index any new documents  that were uploaded.

Has anybody seen this problem or if anybody can recommend what I need to do to
get this feature to work with Basic Authentication?
