Ajax & WebPart

I'm trying to create a AJAX enabled webpart(wp) in my sharepoint
portal, link's I referred suggested me many alteration in my
web.config file to get my Ajax WP working..
After making all those changed appropriately also checking the dll in
GAC I'm ended up in a site crash.
Has anyone noted his experience to get Ajax and wp working perfectly
fine on this portal.

check codeplex for Ajax Webpart feature.. this feature wil make all necessary
changes to Web.Config automatically
