I have but I have no idea how to fix it. At one point in time I had 3
portal servers running and the hang  only happened on one portal. That
portal is going away so I have not bothered troubleshooting it but I
would love to know what causes it.

Is the user  running dual monitors?

In my situation that is true.............

I don't have a great technical explanation (I am
sure it is out there somewhere), but Outlook and the SharePoint browser
don't handle the focus well. Have both the browser and Outlook in the
same, primary monitor and try again.

Well you hit the nail on the head. I tried it in both monitors and it
hung on the second monitor. I then put both applications on the second
monitor and it still hung. I guess it needs to be on the primary

I actually experience this problem too. What I've found is that the application is really not hung, it is just waiting for you to answer the dialog box that allows the application to send email out. However, the dialog box is off the screen (in my case, off the screen to the left of my primary monitor). I typically use ALT+Space+M and use the arrow keys to move the box back onto the primary screen. Crazy, but it worked for me.

that happens to us all the time!

also slight chance you may need to run a reinstall or repair on the OWC.msi
(office web components). this resolves the issue sometimes as well.
