Adding Lists to My Site

I have created a custom list in my My Site area that I want to add as
a web part to my private view. However, when I choose to Add Web Part
it is nowhere to be seen, is it not possible to add standard content
to the My Site area? Seems a pretty natural thing to want to do.

I was able to replicate your scenario. I can not add  a custom  list
web part  to the My Site. However, you can do this in MOSS 2007. I
guess that's a "feature" with SPS 2003?

The reason that you cannot do this is because what you are calling your
"My site  area" is actually two different webs.

The public and private  pages of the SPS My Site (SPSMSITE if memory
serves) site definition are shared by everyone in the corporation. This
one site uses personalization for everyone's view  of these two pages.
When you create a list, it is created  in the top level site of your own
personal Site Collection based on the SPS Personal (SPSPERS if memory
serves) site definition. The out of the box capabilities of SPS 2003 Web
Parts (sans the Grouped Listing web  Part for Listings only) are not
capable of showing the contents of a list  on one web on pages of another
web.

However, this is possible using the Data View Web Part.

First consider the construction of “My Site” in SPS2003.

The public and private  pages are actually portal areas while the collaboration “site” is a site  collection in the personal managed path.

This site collection has no home page. This functionality is provided by the public and private area  pages of a different site collection.

This structure presents two issues:

- The custom  list that you created  is probably in the collaboration site not the “area.” The web  part created when you created the list  is available in the site where the list exists but not in the portal area because the portal areas are in a different site collection from the MySite site collection.

- Everyone uses the same public and private pages as the home pages for their MySite. Modifying them changes them for everyone.

Watch the URL change as you move from either the public or private page to part  of the site collection like the document library.

This changes in MOSS 07 because areas are gone. The public page is a special aspx found over in the _layouts directory but the private pages are part of the user’s site collection.
