Adding images to Lists

i just want an user to add an image to a list. It easy, but when we
let a user to add an image after creating a picture datatype, it always
asks for the link which should be from the picture library. My question
is, we cant let user to add pics to picture library, so is there a way
to solve this like a browse button kinda thing

A picture column doesn't require that the user keep the pictures in a
Picture Library. It does require a protocol and domain name in a URL
pointing to an image. So, your images can be anywhere provided they are
accessible via an HTTP URL.

I wish it supported root relative references but it doesn't.

So the easiest place would be the images folder on the web site?

If the image is placed in a location not available to the user because it is not
published to an extranet/internet, is the user's browser retrieving it or is the
web site retrieving it?

I think the former which would result in a picture not found, right?

You could exlude a managed path of /images from SharePoint Central
Admin -> Virtual server settings. Create a virtual directory on each
web-front end IIS server and put your images there. That will give
you a place in the same namespace to put images, like
http://yourportal.com/images. This, by default, should use the same
authentication mechanism as your SPS/WSS implementation.

A big thanx to all the guys who responded. ok let me try with ur
instructions.Then again when pulling out the image to the list
, how do we specify?

I've written a web part that allows a user to browse their local drives for an image and then uploads the selected image to a picture library that is specified by the administrator. If this would be helpful in your solution, contact me directly.
