Adding filetype to doclib view

I am stumped trying to get the document list (in sites area) to display
the filetype of documents in the library. I see no way in the gui to do
this and I am stumped about which file contains this information. The
document property File_x0020_Type is clearly there and used to determine
which icon to display beside the file name. Any suggestions?
