AD Accounts not visible from team sites

For some reason I can't see user accounts which belong to a particular
AD domain from a team site in a site collection. Therefore I can't
assign permissions for users to access team sites.

We have 6 site collections and only 1 of them can see the users in
this particular AD Domain. All other AD Domains can be seen throughout
all 6 site collections.

Have any of you experienced this before? do you know
what's causing this problem?
