Active Directory Migration SID Issues

Asked By: Keely    Date: Jan 26    Category: Sharepoint    Views: 8548

I am working on an Active Migration project and I am encountering some SID
issues. Here are the basics:

- SharePoint environment in AD 1
- Users/workstation in AD 1 & AD 2

Users & workstations being migrated to AD 3

Users in SharePoint-specific AD groups that have been migrated are not
having access issues, but users addd to local SharePoint groups are. I have
been running -migrateuser scripts to address this, but my manager wants to
know why their SID's are not passing. To be honrst, I do not have an answer
that I can give him.

Can anyone provide any info for me?

I know MOSS uses two identifiers, the SID and the username and if one of
those changes, MOSS has a fit. Is the explanation that simple? Is there a

When you migrate the users  from one Domain to another they are assigned a new
SID in the new domain. The old SID is still part of their AD record, so AD
groups recognize them by either SID. That's why users who gain access  to
SharePoint via AD group membership still work, because the SID of the AD group
hasn't changed. SharePoint doesn't recognize History SIDs, only the main SID of
a user account. So after migrating you need to run STSADM -migrateuser to
change the SharePoint entries to the NEW domain's SID. This is by design and is
the primary reason for the -migrateUser command in STSADM.

That is what I have been doing over the past 6 weeks. At the time earlier
today, I just couldn't formulate the thought in my head. I'm not sure my
manager and his boss believed me when I told them pretty much what you
conveyed in your reply.
