What sort of workspace  and what version of SharePoint?

I am using Ms. SharePoint Portal Server 2001. I have
built a workspace, and store files which I need to
fetch its custom property (I use document profile)
"Due_Date" and compare it with another date (1 week
before).

How to access  these files and their property (because
it is not the default property).
