'Access denied due to server configuration' ways to get round this

When our SharePoint site is accessed from certain clients they cannot
log onto the Portal and the error 'Access denied due to server
configuration' is given. How do we get around this and change the
configuration on either the clients or the server so that they can
access the Portal.
