WSS 3.0 - Clients unable to open files in modify mode...

Yes, the version  of Office in use will have a great deal of effect on the
integration functionality with SharePoint. To get the best integration and
most features, you really need to go to Office 2007. And even then you will
not get some functions unless it is at least Office Pro (Or Enterprise)
