I can think of two options:

1. Wait for Office System/SharePoint Service Pack 1 [1]. It is
supposed to ship with an improved discussion  board.
2. Start messing with FrontPage 2003 to create your own custom
SharePoint XSLT Data View [2].

[1] No, I do not know of any ETA.
[2] I haven't heard of anybody who successfully made such a thing and
I personally decided to wait for SP1 and see what it comes with out of
the box.
